Editorial: End of Jalib Murder Investigation?Former BNP secretary General Habib Jalib, who was shot dead in Quetta on July 14th by unidentified persons, is perhaps the only “lucky” political figure in this country to get his murderers identified within a “very short” period of one month. Pakistan has had a history of several high-profile murders, including that of two former prime ministers i.e. Liaquat Ali Khan and Benazir Bhutto and former Balochistan governor Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. The real culprits responsible for these murders in 1951, 2007 and 2006 respectively could never be traced by the law enforcement agencies. Jalib’s case is strikingly different: Balochistan police claim to have rounded up the actual murders and ascertained confession — of killing Jalib — as well.

The Baloch Hal Brings You Back Shaeed Habib Jalib’s Exclusive InterviewThe Balochistan National Party (BNP) is the larg The BNP quit its seats in the Balochistan Assembly and both houses of the country’s parliament in protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, a former Baloch governor and a chief minister, in a military operation on August 26, 2006. Later on, the BNP boycotted the general elections of 2008 and adopted a hardliner approach towards the country’s polity. A party known for its demand for maximum provincial autonomy to the smaller provinces of Pakistan, BNP today stands for the right of self-determination for the gas-rich Balochistan province. VIEW: Another nail in the coffinHabib Jalib’s murder is another nail in the coffin for Balochistan-Centre reconciliation. Habib was a man from a simple background who rose to prominence as a Baloch nationalist leader through hard work and an undying struggle for Baloch rights. He was a person who had no truck with militancy even when he was jailed numerous times by the state for his so-called anti-state activities. He stuck to the peaceful struggle for Baloch national rights. A lawyer by profession, an ex-senator, secretary general of the BNP-M, he had researched the Baloch issues, especially those pertaining to national identity, unity and integration. A democrat to the core, he was no sardar or nawab, but a humble person with a vision for a democratic, prosperous Pakistan, where the rights of all the diverse nationalities that live in the territories of Pakistan are ensured. His murder is a not only a great loss to the people of Balochistan, but also to the federation. |

“ Balochistan’s situation has crossed all limits. With the award of provincial autonomy, end of 37 year old concurrent list or the constitutional package sent through post would not console the Baloch youths. The youths are seen on roads fighting for their freedom. Responsibility for deteriorating the circumstances in Balochistan does not lie on Baloch people but it goes to same establishment who separated Bengal considering it a burden. The situation in Balochistan has aggravated to an extent that veterans like me cannot redress it.”
