I Cried For Jalib

E-mail Print PDF
Finally, I have no option but to delete 03003823908 from my cell phone. This was the phone number I often used to dial or get calls from. “late” Habib Jalib, secretary general of the Balochistan National Party who was killed here on Wednesday by unidentified assailants, used this number and humbly received phone calls after the second ring.

In the last couple of years, I have deleted several phone numbers from my cell phone after the contacts were target killed from time to time. The Balochistan National Party (BNP) is the larg3.JPGest opposition party in Balochistan which came under severe fire during the military regime of General Pervez Musharraf. The party’s chief, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, a former chief minister of Balochistan, was arrested and literally put into an ‘iron cage’ fore more than one year. Hundreds of NBP leaders were arrested, their names were put on the Exit Control List (ECL) and bank accounts were frozen.

The BNP quit its seats in the Balochistan Assembly and both houses of the country’s parliament in protest against the killing of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, a former Baloch governor and a chief minister, in a military operation on August 26, 2006.

Later on, the BNP boycotted the general elections of 2008 and adopted a hardliner approach towards the country’s polity. A party known for its demand for maximum provincial autonomy to the smaller provinces of Pakistan, BNP today stands for the right of self-determination for the gas-rich Balochistan province.

VIEW: Another nail in the coffin

E-mail Print PDF

Habib Jalib’s murder is another nail in the coffin for Balochistan-Centre reconciliation. Habib was a man from a simple background who rose to prominence as a Baloch nationalist leader through hard work and an undying struggle for Baloch rights. He was a person who had no truck with militancy even when he was jailed numerous times by the state for his so-called anti-state activities. He stuck to the peaceful struggle for Baloch national rights. A lawyer by profession, an ex-senator, secretary general of the BNP-M, he had researched the Baloch issues, especially those pertaining to national identity, unity and integration. A democrat to the core, he was no sardar or nawab, but a humble person with a vision for a democratic, prosperous Pakistan, where the rights of all the diverse nationalities that live in the territories of Pakistan are ensured. His murder is a not only a great loss to the people of Balochistan, but also to the federation.
